Over the past two years, the Brisbane Trail Ultra Team donated $6,000 to Bush Heritage Australia (BHA). We’ve pledged $3.00 from our race entries and training camps from the past two years to reach this target, and we chipped in the rest.
In 2024, we will pledge another $3,000+ to the BHAoffers, $3.00 from each race entry; we hope to reach 1000+ entries in 2024.
The recent wild weather events in Europe, Hawaii, Canada and beyond have reminded us why we connected with BHA in 2022. As trail runners, it is impossible to ignore the effects of climate change and its impact on our wild spaces as the driving force behind choosing BHA as our charity partner for the 2022, 2023 and 2024 events. In return for our donation, BHA those adored Bush Heritage Australian Koala Socks in your race packs.
For those of you who have never heard of Bush Heritage Australia, here is a little bit of a history lesson. BHA started in 1991 in the Liffey Valley of Tasmania. Environmentalist Bob Brown purchased two forest blocks to protect them from logging, and a passionate community was born. BHA has grown into a leading national organisation from those first few hundred hectares of land. They are now protecting 1.2 million hectares of land across the continent through a network of reserves and partnerships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and other landholders.
Bush Heritage leads with the right-way approach – implementing both the knowledge systems of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and Western ecological science. Today, BHA is a unified force for nature, working together across the country to protect life – from the smallest ant to the tallest tree.

As a donor to BHA, the Team at Brisbane Trail Ultra was lucky enough to be invited to a community viewing of The Giants, a film about the life of Bob Brown and his passion for conservation.

In 2023, nature continued to make urgent calls for its protection, calls heard across the globe reminders of the importance of Bush Heritage's work and the pressing need to do more. Around the country, field staff, partners and volunteers mobilised as we continue to work towards the goals in our ambitious 2030 strategy.
After two years impacted by the global pandemic, we harnessed the momentum that being back together brings, delivering conservation outcomes grounded in science and culture. It was a year of listening and learning with our Aboriginal Partners as we continue to walk together to heal country.
Our work with agricultural partners and private landholders expanded, delivering impact beyond our reserve boundaries, from the Midlands of Tasmania to the mainland's vast pastoral landscapes.
Across our reserves, we worked alongside leading scientists, research bodies and partners to conserve our irreplaceable landscapes. And by formalising our 'Seeding the Future' program, we help to foster the next generation of conservationists.
Thank you for your extraordinary commitment to our work and plan. Your generous support enables us to meet the challenges of today and tomorrow.
Hopefully, this coming year, we’ve been told BHA is lining up a few exciting land acquisitions as they strive for their 2030 Strategy goals of doubling the land they manage from 1.2 Million to 2.4 million hectares; that’s LARGER than the State of Victoria.
It’s so lovely that just by entering the BTU in 2022 and 2023, you’ve helped BHA do what they do best: help restore the land to good health.
